Mien Culture

The Mien are a very friendly and peaceful folk respected for their warmhearted hospitality and loyalty towards their family and friends. All in all their family takes the first place in their life. Living together closely in big families of many generations strengthens the family bonds and leads to very distinct identification through the own family. Further Mien identify over their social status, which is settled through different components as age, family, profession, wealth and also clothes. Hierarchy is a very important part of Mien - or overall Thai culture. To respect a person higher in social status than you is a matter of course and denying someone this respect is very rude and can result - depending on how much influence that person has - in serious consequences.

But most of the time the Mien life style is very calm and free of conflicts. They love peace and harmony in their surroundings so they do everything in their power to avoid conflicts and to make sure everyone around them is happy. Social life is very important and Mien treat their neighbors like family. Just sitting together after work on the fields, talking, eating, simply spending time with each other is part of the everyday-life. Just walking

through a small Mien village gives the impression of one big family, where everyone knows everyone and where they love, accept and support each other. Mien do everything in their own time and pace. You will rarely meet a stressed Mien. Things just have their own time here and the tribe people are content with that.
